Spotlight On Recovery Releases Two New Videos
Recovery Speaks: Success and Survival, and Opening the Door: The Trail to Treatment, are by-products of the Spotlight on Recovery Stigma Reduction project, based in King County, Washington. Current statistics tell us that eight out of every ten people in America have been touched by addiction, whether personally, through a family member, friend, or co-worker. Spotlight on Recovery is a grassroots organization seeking to educate society on the negative effects of stigmatizing individuals in recovery from alcohol/drug addiction, as well as to advocate for the rights of people struggling with addiction and living in recovery.
Recovery Speaks provides personal and insightful views about the reality of life in recovery through a series of interviews with eight individuals who are currently living in long-term recovery. Their messages are heartwarming and heartfelt. The participants speak about dealing with the damaging effects of stigma, as well as the overwhelming positive messages of beating addiction, and the benefit to society of supporting recovery.
Opening the Door is an expose on the treatment process, and answers several very basic questions, for example: Is addiction really a disease? How do I find out if this is my problem? How do I get help? What is available to me? How much will it cost? How long will it take? What will happen to me? Can I really beat it? These questions are discussed by five people who have recently undergone treatment for substance addiction, a family member, and professionals from five treatment facilities. The goal is to demystify the treatment process, dispel public myths about addiction and treatment, and demonstrate that treatment does work, and recovery is real.
Both of the videos attempt to educate society about recovery and addiction, give support to the recovery community in finding their voices to speak about their own recovery, and to encourage those still fighting addiction to seek help. The overall goal is to put a positive face on recovery.
While set in the Seattle area, the circumstances and experiences can be shared nationwide by anyone who has been touched by addiction. By giving a face and voice to recovery, and demonstrating the success of treatment, our participants seek to educate the public, reduce stigma, give encouragement to others in recovery to share their stories, and to provide hope and direction to those still seeking recovery.
